a report from the forest

I'm helping track down where that amalgam monster came from and got to wondering what grew it. It's... the ideas in it are ones that belong here, but it's like something kicked them closer to the surface, and that allowed them to take root.

Whatever stirred this up, it's pretty deep.

There’s a large lake, at the end of the path. Bigger than all the rest. And there’s a bloody great sinkhole at the bottom of it.

And sinkholes have traditionally boded so well for us. [Sure, Naoki hasn't been around for Harrogate and hasn't felt much need to backread the network about it, but he's still aware of the association there.]

Is anyone investigating the lake more closely?

Well, if this is the spot where things take shape, it's not entirely surprising that they're incomplete.

Do we have any way to tell if they're... any relation to Harrogate-level stuff, or just regular nightmares? [He doesn't think Harrogate-grade bad is likely, but the second they don't account for the possibility is when they have Problems.]

We did not sense any eldritch influences.

The Nightmares are the same as those that were in the forest. Adversaries. Harbingers. Travellers.

People who are new. Different. Unknown.

And you expect to get information from this how? I'm used to processing a flood of information. Unless I can hook it up to a computer, we don't seem to have a ton of options for how to filter t hrough it, do we? I don't plan to do it long enough for damage to set in, but there's another layer down there. We need to dig through that.

Hell. There's so many damn ideas and dreams down there that it coulda been anything that belongs here. Tried to see if I could pick up anything more than Kinji did - and no, I didn't go doin' anythin' dumb to do it - and it's just a wall of ... all the dreams.
So no damn wonder it's all the nightmares too.

The forest doesn't seem to change between the eras - at least, everyone I've talked to thought it was the same forest they remembered.

Maybe it's the new things in each era that are making new ideas come up - Adversaries, Travelers, and Harbingers.
