[Felix's psychic voice can be just as biting as his actual one, particularly when he's in a Mood. Which is most days, lately]

I realize not everyone here has had the privilege of living at court, but would it kill you to at least pretend to be competent at dancing?

Honestly, at this rate they're going to uncover the lot of us the next time some of you step onto the dance floor, and I can imagine what a mess that would turn out to be.

[There's a small pause, Felix's thoughts redirecting and gathering themselves. He sounds less angry now, though]

And is anyone else sensing some eerie parallels to their own worlds?

I apologize for my lack of dancing abilities. It is not a skill one teaches detectives in my world.

What do you mean by parallels?

Well, it's a useful one to have in these sorts of travels.

Other year's-end rituals. Or arcane devices nobody knows the origins of but pay obeisance to anyway.

Ah. The latter sounds like something every world has, does it not? There are traditions and objects that people revere which no one know from where they came.

If anyone is in need of dancing lessons, I can provide at least a beginner's course. I have not taught before, but dancing has been a part of my education. I should have you at least able to follow if someone else leads.

Yes, there are some similarities to my home's traditions, though this seems a near opposite. We would dance to celebrate the return of the sun, not to prolong the winter.

[There's a small mental sigh] I suppose I could show people as well. At least enough not to step on anyone's toes, anyway.

We mark the turn of the year at the summer solstice, though the Lower City does so in the fall - though there's usually some sort of gala for the winter solstice as well. This 'Orrery' is a little concerning, too.

Any assistance you could offer would be appreciated, my lord. The longer we can hold out without being detected as intruders and punished for it, the better. There have already been rumors. It is strange, though... there doesn't seem to be a hunt for them, or any guest list available to check.

An orrery! I had not yet heard the term... But why would they... [Raising his 'voice' to project on a broader psychic band:] Would it be possible to make a machine powered by movement or rhythm? One that would be able to shift the course of the planet? A "program" is a term often used in terms of more advanced machinery, is it not? Like computers?

As a profession? No. But I can dance, and I can teach.

I usually drink when I have to go to that kind of ball, so I don't have much practice.

[Felix would be playing the world's tiniest violin for you if he knew that expression]

Alcohol only helps if you already know what you're doing.

To be fair to everyone who can't dance, not all of us come from worlds or times that really have balls and these kinds of dances all that often.

As for the parallels thing - are we talking about how this whole thing is feeling like a really direct follow-up to 'White Christmas'?

Time to learn in a hurry, then.

I'm afraid that reference doesn't exist in my world.

It's a popular Christmas song that's pretty much going on about wishing for it to snow.

I'd sing it for you but it might make your ears bleed. Or brain, as the case may be at this time.

I can assist in dance lessons, should anyone need them. My apologies, I should have offered before- I was not quite sure if the dancing would parallel those I'm used to or not.

That said, yes, there is some semblance. Not much, I'm afraid, but enough to cause unease.

There is? And what semblance is that, pray tell? This reminds me distinctly of Carnevale, but it is only due to the dancing and masks.

The dancing, the manners, the way everyone seems so tense. ... I believe they each have their own agendas, the same as home.

We must trust no one.

Except for each other, of course. That part, that is most different.

Hey, some of us have never done anything like this. Give us a break. Pretending to know how to dance is not as easy as you think it is!
