A revelation!

So Cassandra has apparently been getting Magical Mystery Tour beamed into her head as a hint when she did spooky things to the bus. It's a Beatles song, oldies to my parents, psychedelic hippie shit from the 60's.

There's one song in particular on it, 'I Am The Walrus,' that caught my eye BECAUSE we're heading for a space opera. The opening line is:

'I am he as you are he and you are me and we are all together...'

So hey, quick question about QC and known space! Do we know about any hive minded aliens from that 'verse? Cause if not, we might have ourselves an old fashioned bug hunt when we arrive. Or, knowing the Arcana, preventing one!

ETA:

Someone way smarter than me with the Oracle powers that clued us into the Katadors being sweet guys, really just used those powers to ask what we were probably up against.

Roughly:
3 in 10 chance it's the Starmovers trying to make a new Role.
2 in 10 chance it's the Arcana.
3 in 20 it's the Hecatites doing something hinky, same as my guess that there's a new species in town or that something like the Skittles is trying to make a new Role.
1 in 10 it's "who the hell knows," a new role arising naturally, or Backstage breaking from that time ROSE decided fracking a dreamscape for magic was a good idea.
1 in 40 chance it's one of the old powers getting Borgy with it.

The chances are about 1 in 10 to 1 in 5 that the Hecatites are taking advantage of whatever it is that's going on, depending on what tiger they're trying to ride.

Also, it's not fucking Cthulhu you piece of shit Travellers, so we can rest easy on that score.

There were rumors about rogue Synthetic networks in the Waking World, but Synthetics can't dream without a Valence.
fridgeninja: (considering)

[personal profile] fridgeninja 2020-08-31 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure. If they say they're sending us to Questing Country, what's happening in the Waking World probably isn't involved... Investigators never 'wake up' to find themselves on Hekate or Sublune, that I heard of.
fridgeninja: (so that's it)

I'll keep my eyes open.

For Walruses, too.

Last full Jaunt there actually did have people going to the Waking World to pull off a revolution, so I'm not sure I'd discount Waking World bullshit just yet.

From what I remember, Hecatites tend to have a more regimented society, but not having Infiltrated as one, I'm fuzzy on details.

You mean livestreaming or memory-sharing?

It's one of the more basic psychic skills, actually.
bite_the_hand: (I don't know about that...)

[personal profile] bite_the_hand 2020-09-02 08:30 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure that counts. We were only able to get to Waking World by using Liminal Bridge. It seemed more like something we did despite the Jaunt, instead of a part of it.

[personal profile] razorblade_empress 2020-09-02 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just saying there's precedent, even if it wasn't the main mission of the Jaunt. It's possible the Waking World will be more relevant this time.

[personal profile] bite_the_hand 2020-09-04 09:13 am (UTC)(link)
[There's a mental wince.] I guess us setting that precedent could've given them ideas... If we did, I hope they'll at least let us move between Dreaming and Waking more freely.

That'd be good, yeah.

[Well. Maybe. Depending on what they end up having to do ion this hypothetical.]

It's definitely not Gorgons. They can barely tolerate one other person's company on a good day, for the most part.
leftbehindagain: (you thought about exploring the TV world)

[personal profile] leftbehindagain 2020-08-31 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Humans, Gorgons and Hecatites are the main spacefaring races with access to Questing Country. Gorgons are reptilian and really don't like social gatherings - too much sensory input for them to be comfortable. Hecatites are basically walking rocks.

There are a few other races that don't do space travel unless they were kidnapped, since that's the only way anyone's ever gotten to their home planets. That's elves, Spartoi, and... I can't remember the name of the amphibious ones. I think it starts with a V.

I wouldn't expect many Synthetics or Diabolin in Questing Country, but stranger things have happened, I guess. Synthetics are robots, and Diabolin did a lot of the kidnapping of other races. They don't sleep, as a general rule.

I end up as a Gorgon a lot, if I'm not myself, so someone else would have to explain Hecatites.

Literal elves - and not the same kind we came across later, either.

Oh Jesus fucking Christ. No, we don't know about a goddamn Borg but that doesn't mean one can't show up.

Re: angling towards Network Archive Retreival

[personal profile] thornsofmalkav 2020-09-02 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Oh sure.

See, the thing about the network is that you need to try treating it like it's a network. Conceive of it like it's a-- message board, maybe. Or hell, an LJ or a Dreamwidth... if they still have online journal sites in your time.
thornsofmalkav: (Default)

[personal profile] thornsofmalkav 2020-09-02 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
... social distancing tech?

But yeah. Just-- treat the network like a message board or an eljay. That's how you bookmark things too.

They're not a hive mind by any means, but the Diabolin tend to crowd source their perception of reality. They don't dream, so they can't enter Questing Country - or they didn't the last time we were there. That may have changed.
reallymean: (haunted)

It would be. Especially if they were able to influence emotions in dreams as well as in waking.
reallymean: (Default)

[personal profile] reallymean 2020-09-02 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Hearts more than heads. They can't influence thought, not directly, but they can push emotions on other people. Usually within the spectrum of what they were feeling - scare a Diabolin, and she could terrify you in turn - but some of them practiced enough to be...creative.

I can give you details about their culture and technology, but it may be out of date, depending on when within that reality's timeline we land. I'm...familiar with them at the height of their empire, not after its collapse.
reallymean: (sad)

[personal profile] reallymean 2020-09-02 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
After. My overlay never knew her homeworld, except by story.

It was a...difficult Jaunt, but the Travellers were able to help them strike a blow against the Empire. Not enough to topple it, but enough to help keep hope burning until it began to fall.

So am I. Intergalactic conquerors were not one of the things I'd hoped would reoccur across the multiverse.
bite_the_hand: (I don't know about that...)

[personal profile] bite_the_hand 2020-09-01 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think so. The Starmovers think differently from us and the other people in that world, but as far as I know there's been nothing to suggest they're linked up like that so it's probably not them.

I do not like where this is going.
bite_the_hand: (Huh?)

[personal profile] bite_the_hand 2020-09-02 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
So instead of a hive mind, the song could be important because the Starmovers are sharing their power in a way that doesn't stop people from thinking clearly? ...Huh, that possibility sounds kind of cool.

I still don't like those odds, but we'll just have to be careful. Going in assuming anything would probably end badly for everyone.
bite_the_hand: (Less Grumpy Neutral)

[personal profile] bite_the_hand 2020-09-04 09:37 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not the best person to ask about that. Most of the time I've spent in that world has been on the Waking side. I missed the first trip to Questing Country and the second time I was... kind of distracted.

I do remember that a Starmover's Dreams were messing up the place by creating Transformed Lands and turning people into Harbingers. But they weren't doing it on purpose. Starmovers just think really differently from most of the people we've met, and they and the other Dreamers had no idea how talk to or even recognize each other as people at first.
