Has anyone else gotten an offer from those new guys about being let into their club?

Huh. How eager were they to offer their Conductor-yness to you?

The way she phrased it, she thought I'd be pretty perfect for it, but told me to wait a week to think on it and get back to her after they've tidied this mess up.

I haven't made up my mind yet, to be honest.

I mean, if you think you can keep your own head in there, I think it wouldn't be a bad idea to have someone on the inside.

Though- I don't know, we have ways of like. Backing up people's memory states, right? I think? It might be a good idea to do that before. Just in case, you know?

Huh. Actually, that might be a great idea. Plus they were talking about me making a copy of Shacklebreaker, so they could test if that works on breaking their bond.

But having a back-up of me, or something scanned and prepared for comparing before and after seems like a really good idea.

...so how many people can do stuff like that again? [She knows it's a lot.]

I have good ideas sometimes! Just don't ask my CMO, alright? He'll tell you I'm 'Reckless, impulsive and downright stupid' but don't listen to him, he's grumpy.

And Shacklebreaker? That sounds like... something big.

And I'm afraid that without the Enterprise'd equipment I'm not personally able to do it, so we should probably put out a call, huh?

That's a strange thing to ask you to make, when they could have asked for my help, or undertaken a quest for the Shacklebreaker left in the Dream. I wonder, are they looking to free someone from an unwanted bond, or exile someone who doesn't fall in line with the rest of the collective.

I did offer to make them a new Bident, I made a point of advertising that to get into their good graces. Shacklebreaker was more implied than outright asked, they brought it up and wondered what I'd make of it.

And honestly? Something that can break that kind of shit, I don't want to make. The last time I did something like that I got put in time-out for five thousand years.

I don't think anyone here could quite manage that, but as unstable as things are, I wouldn't trust them not to try.

...There are some checks on the original version, and so on the one I carry. It can break any chain, but anyone trying to override someone else's choices by shattering their willing bonds wouldn't be able to use it as anything but a very old gravitic weapon.

Yeah, they didn't say what they wanted it for. Maybe Conductors can't be retired any other way. Which is a whole other kind of concerning, really.

Especially when there's no guarantee that severing them from the other Conductors would let them retire. Or that severing them from Questing Country entirely wouldn't have terrible side effects.

Well, I'll definitely let you know if they bring it up again. I can ask more about it as well, they sure as hell were ready to explain why it was so significant.

[And then her voice takes on a pleased, teasing edge.] Taking on another evil empire all on your own, were you? I wish I could say I was surprised.

[There's a huff of slightly embarrassed laughter.]

Not quite. Legends might take firmer hold when they're about a small handful of people, but a lot of people stood and fought.
