claudiometer: side-facing surprisedface (well that's not good)

Okay so I'm thinking this is another of those points where we could use someone who's been here and not just to Ninjaville before, but:

What the fuck was that noise last night, odds it's something we're here to deal with, and how do we make it stop?
thornsofmalkav: (scared)

Spooky as fuck, that's what it was.

[Psychic protection had helped a lot last night but still. Holy crap.]
thornsofmalkav: (talking)

[personal profile] thornsofmalkav 2016-12-20 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no. I've heard normal Siren song before from Alcuin. That was not that.
papacerberus: (This is worrysome.)

[personal profile] papacerberus 2016-12-20 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
It... was Song, but not from a Siren. It's... corrupted, somehow, but I felt arrested by it, and had great difficulty focusing on anything else while whatever it was Sang. Whatever it is, it's potentially dangerous just for that fact. It came from... the northwest, I think? That was the direction I was facing when it stopped.
papacerberus: (Thoughtful gaze.)

[personal profile] papacerberus 2016-12-20 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
On the boat.

[There's silence for a while.] It might be because Alcuin has taught me Songs? All Souls Rest and the Song of Calming, specifically.

As you say, it is likely what we were brought to face. It was... Unnerving to hear.

[He doesn't know he got protected by his Psychic Protection I, but he's still not going to get any sleep until they're safely not in the middle of the water.]

Agreed.

... We should keep a watch at night. In shifts so that no one loses too much sleep.

theflyingone: i always feel like somebody's watching me (look back)

[personal profile] theflyingone 2016-12-20 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
[ Altaïr's psychic "voice" is quiet, almost difficult to hear. Not shaky and fearful, but... hesitant, and disturbed. ]

Song.

[ after a moment, a little louder, ]

It sounded like the Siren's Song. Every Song is different. In this world, if we are right about it being a return, the possibilities are endless.

Alcuin described it as the purvey of a sea goddess, and those who choose to follow her and learn her Song. Singing the Song can be very powerful in chorus, but... there are side effects. [ He suspects his fellow Singers would not want others to know how addicting it is. ] I would not ask 'what' it is, but 'who.' Perhaps even several 'who's.
theflyingone: heard you were talkin shit (f looking surly)

[personal profile] theflyingone 2016-12-20 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
[ Part of the reason why Altaïr is so disturbed is because he knows not everyone has psychic resilience, or any other means to avoid the Song. ]

If they mean anything at all. It may have been unplanned, like a riot.

[ Do mermaids riot? He supposes they do... ]

We should be careful of approaching the people of the sea regardless. Any one of them could be a servant or slave to this Song.

memoryandtheft: (can i get there by candle-light?)

[personal profile] memoryandtheft 2016-12-20 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
Wax, cotton, or shouting. If it's sound-based magic, it usually has to be heard to be effective.

[personal profile] memoryandtheft 2016-12-20 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
Assuming we have someone who's willing to be subjected to Siren magic, we can test that part with our own people. If it affects someone who's sumbmerged but can't hear it, we'll know stopping your ears only works if you're above the water.

Even if this thing is older, or corrupted, or however you want to interpret it, it'll work on similar principles.

Since everyone else seems to have the "creepy" part covered, if it's something potentially dangerous, I'll just offer that I spent a goodly amount of time back home with earplugs. Werewolves have supernatural hearing, and I lived in a busy metropolis. So I'm familiar enough with the expensive kind that I could manufacture some that would be safe for above- or below-water use, back in liminal space, that would be at least relatively effective at blocking sound in general.

Won't help if feeling vibrations on the skin affects those underwater, but if it's just the ear drum, it should at least help.

[personal profile] professorwolf 2016-12-21 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
I'll pop into liminal for a little and make some, then. Anyone who needs them, or just wants them for that matter, can find me in the Workshop for the next couple of hours.

I... um, hmm. I don't see why not, but it might take me a few tries to get something that fits properly. Can you bring her into liminal and let me give it a go?

Could anyone tell where the sound was coming from? It seems like people attuned to the mermaids' Song heard it more clearly, for better or worse. The logical epicenter would be the island, but not necessarily.

It reminded me a bit of a corrupted version of the Tachyon Song. If I had the correct parts, I might be able to recreate Lapis' robot that analyzed it, but I would need more processing power than this ship holds.
